Transmission is importrant to me and has nourished my practice. I have focused alot on teaching observational drawing and experimental drawing but I have also taught painting and art history in several 3rd level institutions in France for more than fifteen years including the American University of Paris.
Drawing what is in front of us, is about increasing the student’s ability to see, to perceive, more and differently. It is arguably the most effective way of observing our own responses. Thus, it has a value and impact far beyond the field of visual art. I have spent many years researching and testing the most effective exercises which seek to achieve a balance between enjoyment and rigour, process and achievement.
I have many years of experience teaching: life drawing, compositional studies, outdoor sketching, analysis of art works. As an elemental response to what we see, drawing also provides a broad platform for discussion on all aspects of a subject from the practical to the historical, to the environmental, to the philosphical. As such it is adaptable to all ages and contexts and I have gained much from teaching to both children, 3rd-level students and adults.
